| There are many things to do within driving distance of
the City of Lorain. This is a partial list I have compiled of some of my
favorites. All destinations are within a one hour drive unless otherwise
noted.

French
Creek Nature Center
(Located on Colorado Ave., east of East River
Rd.)
The French Creek Nature Center is a service of
the Lorain County Metro Parks and is open daily 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The
Center has many exhibits of local animal habitats and is a learning tool
for the community. Lectures and nature hikes, as well as other programs,
are often available. Stop in for more information.
Lorain
Lighthouse
(Located just offshore of Municipal Pier.)
The Jewel of the Port. The Lorain Lighthouse
was built in 1917 by the Army Corps of Engineers. It is located at the
end of a rough stone breakwall and consists of a two-story building built
atop a square concrete foundation. The white walls of the lighthouse are
solid concrete, built to weather the roughest Lake Erie storm. After an
automated light was built in 1965, the lighthouse was slated for demolition
by the US Coast guard. Local citizens intervened, forming a "Save the Lighthouse"
committee. A severe storm delayed the planned demolition long enough for
the group to come to an agreement with the Coast guard. The lighthouse
is currently owned by the Port of Lorain Foundation, and plans are underway
to restore the structure.
